Citroen extends airbag recall across Europe, affecting over 860,000 vehicles
French automaker Citroen has announced an extension of its recall for the best-selling C3 and DS3 models across Europe, targeting a dangerous defect in Takata-branded airbags. The recall affects 869,000 vehicles, including 400,000 in France.
Parent company Stellantis stated on Tuesday that the recall will initially cover vehicles sold in France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Moldova, Switzerland and Ukraine in the coming weeks, with plans to extend it to other countries later.
On Nov. 24, Stellantis Türkiye also launched a recall campaign for the same reason, urging vehicle owners to contact authorized service centers.
Takata affair on Citroen’s best-selling models
The defect in Takata airbags, which has been linked to several fatalities since 2014, occurs when gas inside the airbags reacts to heat and moisture, causing parts to project into drivers’ faces upon deployment.
The safety issues with Takata airbags have impacted automakers globally, forcing major brands such as Volkswagen, Nissan, BMW, and Toyota to recall millions of vehicles worldwide.
Citroen customers can check if their car is affected by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) on a dedicated recall website.
