Syria’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Qusay Al-Dahhak, on Wednesday called for the full lifting of sanctions imposed on the country, stressing that these measures were aimed at the previous regime under Bashar al-Assad and continue to hinder the country’s recovery efforts.

Speaking during a UN Security Council session on Syria, Al-Dahhak delivered his statement based on the instructions of the Syrian government. He highlighted that it had been “one month since the dawn of freedom has broken in Syria,” referring to the recent political shifts following the collapse of the Assad regime.

Syria enters a new era of freedom

“Syria is entering a new era,” Al-Dahhak said. “The Syrian people have removed the chains of oppression and reclaimed the freedom they were deprived of for decades.”

The envoy portrayed the fall of Assad’s regime as a “revolution of freedom and dignity,” framing it as the beginning of a transformative period for the nation.

Al-Dahhak’s comments targeted the United States directly, urging the US and other countries to remove sanctions that were initially aimed at the Assad government. He argued that these sanctions continue to affect ordinary Syrians, exacerbating their economic and humanitarian challenges.

“We call upon the United States and other countries to fully lift these measures imposed on the Syrian people because they originally targeted the previous regime and its criminal tools,” he stated.

New Syria government’s partnership with the United Nations

The Syrian ambassador further emphasized Syria’s commitment to working with the United Nations and the international community to improve the lives of its citizens. He spoke of the country’s dedication to building a future based on freedom, equality, and the rule of law.

“Syria believes in partnership with the United Nations and its member states. It is committed to promoting cooperation to improve the living and humanitarian conditions of Syrians,” Al-Dahhak said. “Our goal is to provide basic services to our people, achieving a future worthy of Syria’s civilization, the blood of its martyrs, and the sacrifices of its citizens.”

Al-Dahhak also addressed the reconstruction efforts in Syria, noting that state institutions were transitioning smoothly to a new government. He called on the United Nations and its member states to respect the will of the Syrian people and refrain from foreign interference in the country’s political process.

“External actors should not interfere with the political process,” he said, emphasizing that such interference undermines the interests of the Syrian people. “We must restore security, stability, and prosperity in our society.”

In closing, Al-Dahhak reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to peace, insisting that the country would not engage in any further conflict or war.

“Syria is committed to peace,” he declared, “and we will not engage in conflict or war.”
