Worldwide protests mark 76th anniversary of Nakba

Millions around the world protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza on the 76th anniversary of the Nakba. Demonstrations spread to many countries, demanding justice for Palestinians

On May 14, 1948, Israel declared its independence on occupied Palestinian territories, leading to the forced displacement of Palestinians. Palestinians refer to May 15 as Nakba (the Great Catastrophe).

On the 76th anniversary of Nakba, millions of people around the world took to the streets in support of Palestinians, who have faced numerous acts of violence by Israel in Gaza since October 7. Despite police interventions and arrests, hundreds of thousands protested against Israel.

Thousands rally in Berlin

In Berlin, thousands gathered at Oranienplatz Square in the Kreuzberg district. A small theatrical performance commemorated Palestinians who have suffered under Israeli occupation for 76 years. After the performance, a march began.

German police reported 6,200 demonstrators at the Nakba march. Clashes occurred near the German Foreign Ministry as demonstrators’ reactions intensified. The march, expected to continue to the Brandenburg Gate, was cut short due to the incidents.

Nakba anniversary marked across Europe

In Barcelona, Spain, tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian supporters marked the 76th anniversary of the Nakba. The protests continued for hours, with demonstrators vocally opposing Israel’s actions.

In Paris, a march commemorated the 76th anniversary of Israel’s establishment on Palestinian lands and the resulting Nakba. Demonstrators carried banners and chanted slogans protesting Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza since October 7.

UN Event in New York

The 76th anniversary of the Nakba was marked with a commemorative event at the U.N. building in New York. Held in Ecosoc Hall, the event, entitled “1948-2024: The Ongoing Palestinian Nakba”, brought together diplomats and experts to reflect on the continued displacement of Palestinians.

London march calls for solidarity

In central London, a march on Regent Street called for solidarity with Palestine and a ceasefire in Gaza. The march ended at Downing Street, with over 250,000 participants chanting slogans such as “Free Palestine,” “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” and “Rishi Sunak, you can’t hide, we’ll judge you for genocide.”

Geneva, Copenhagen join global protests against Israeli attacks

People gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, to protest against Israel’s attacks on Gaza. The demonstration started at the Lise Girardin Square in the city center, where a large crowd gathered before marching through the streets of Geneva.
