After a seven-year project, entrepreneurs officially announced the world’s largest aircraft, Radia Windrunner

When completed, the Radia Windrunner, the world’s largest aircraft in length and cargo volume, promises to revolutionize the renewable energy sector by simplifying the transport of massive wind turbine blades. Its sheer size easily dwarfs the most iconic commercial airliners. Radia Windrunner is 108 meters (354.33 feet) long, 24 meters high, and 79.5 meters wide. Boeing 747-8, one of the most famous structures in commercial aviation, is 32 meters shorter than WindRunner.

WindRunner, which has a cargo-carrying capacity of 12 times more than Boeing 747, also requires a runway of approximately 1,800 meters. So, what exactly will this plane be used for? Another example of where bigger is better is wind turbines. Today, the length of the blades used in wind turbines continues to increase radically.

Chinese manufacturer Sany produces the world’s longest wind turbine blade, even WindRunner won’t be able to carry the biggest ones. However, the wings that can currently be mass-produced, with a length of 45 to 90 meters and a weight of 35 tons, can be transported.

Although size is not always good, having the biggest one in some specific areas comes with various advantages. One of these is cargo planes used in the aviation industry. Radia, an energy startup, recently announced seven-year plans for the world’s largest aircraft, WindRunner. The giant aircraft is planned to be used primarily in renewable energy.

These blades seriously challenge current transportation methods, especially for land-based wind turbines. Beyond solving current transportation constraints, WindRunner’s large capacity paves the way for developing even more giant terrestrial turbines. Experts estimate that these large turbines could increase energy production consistency by 20% and reduce energy costs by up to 35%.

When will Radia WindRunner fly?

Although WindRunner is just a current demonstration, Radia stated that the plane could take to the skies within four years. Although the primary target is wind energy, this aircraft can also facilitate the transportation of extremely heavy military equipment.
