Journalists supporting Palestinians face increased pressures and dismissals from Western media, with allegations pointing to the suppression of the Palestinian narrative and concealment of Israel’s actions

As the conflict in Gaza intensifies, journalists advocating for Palestinian rights are facing increased pressures, dismissals and threats from Western media organizations.

Accusations from various journalists point to a suppression of the Palestinian narrative and an alleged concealment of Israel’s actions by major Western media outlets.

In the Media’s Struggle for Truth in the Gaza War symposium organized by Türkiye’s Presidential Communication Directorate, journalists Bassam Bounenni and Zahraa al-Akhrass shared their experiences.

Bounenni, who resigned from the BBC in protest, criticized the Western media’s handling of Israel’s attacks on Gaza, describing it as “shocking” and “disappointing.”

He highlighted the downplaying of verifiable facts, framing the conflict as recent, and the mistreatment of Gaza civilians.

Bounenni emphasized the substantial pressure on pro-Palestinian journalists in Western countries, citing instances of colleagues being forced to resign or fired.

Zahraa al-Akhrass, fired by Global News, criticized the Western media’s attitude, citing threats and attempts to silence pro-Palestinian voices.

The journalist revealed she was asked to remove social media posts critical of Israel, leading to her termination when she refused.

Both journalists highlighted a moral crisis in the Western media landscape, with concerns about biased reporting, censorship and the stifling of freedom of speech for those critical of Israel.

The symposium shed light on the challenges faced by journalists supporting Palestinians and the difficult choices they confront between conscience and employment.
