Western media bias? Closer look at NYT’s reporting on Gaza and Ukraine attacks
Since the start of the Gaza war, Western media has faced criticism for perceived bias and efforts to whitewash Israel’s actions. Recently, the BBC’s coverage came under scrutiny, and now The New York Times is in the spotlight for similar reasons.
Pro-Palestinian activists and journalists have reportedly said that Western media’s portrayal of Israel’s assaults on Gaza only presents one side of the issue, degrading Palestinians and defending Israel’s transgressions of international law.
Just like the BBC, The New York Times, an American daily newspaper giant, is facing criticism for its coverage. In its headline about an Israeli attack on a school in Gaza, The New York Times used passive voice without specifying who carried out the attack.
In contrast, the news article detailing Russia’s assault on a children’s hospital in Ukraine explicitly attributed the attack to Russia and employed emotionally charged language, including the term “deadly”.
However, The New York Times updated its headline on the attack in Gaza in response to the reactions, this time using the phrase “Israeli attack” in its headline.
