A violent attack during the 650th anniversary celebration of Solingen has resulted in at least three deaths and multiple injuries including four serious, according to local sources. The assault occurred at the Festival of Diversity, held in the city’s Fronhof marketplace, which had been transformed for the event.
The three-day festival, estimated to attract more than 80,000 visitors, was brought to a halt as the government suggested people leave the city center.
Emergency services are currently responding to the situation, with at least nine individuals reported to have been stabbed. Authorities have issued a major alert and have urged residents to evacuate the city center. The police have not yet apprehended any suspects, and the assailant remains at large.
The weapon used in the attack is believed to be a knife, as reported by police sources. The extent of the casualties is still unclear, with ongoing efforts to save the lives of those critically injured.
Pictures and videos circulating on social media show a significant police presence, with large sections of the city cordoned off as investigations continue.
