US, UK launch new airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthis
The strikes were against ‘eight Houthi targets in Yemen in response to the Houthis’ attacks against international shipping transiting the Red Sea
The United States and the United Kingdom carried out another round of airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthis Tuesday, saying their recent joint military action against the Iran-backed rebels was in line with the continued attacks on shipping.
The strikes were against “eight Houthi targets in Yemen in response to the Houthis’ continued attacks against international and commercial shipping and naval vessels transiting the Red Sea,” Washington and London said in a joint statement with other countries that supported the military action.
The Houthis’ official news agency had reported the strikes earlier in the day, saying they hit the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country.
This move aligns with previous U.S. efforts to exert pressure on the Houthis, including recent military actions. The U.S. military reported thwarting an imminent threat to both military and civilian ships in Yemen by destroying four anti-air missiles.
The Houthis, claiming to represent Palestinians in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, have faced increased actions from U.S. forces. In the latest attacks, over 150 munitions targeted nearly 30 facilities and a Houthi radar site.
