US targets Russian state media RT with new sanctions for covert operations
U.S. announced a fresh wave of sanctions against the Russian state-run media outlet RT on Friday, accusing the network of conducting covert cyber intelligence and influence operations across Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
“These Kremlin-backed media outlets are not just undermining democracy in the U.S., but also interfering in the sovereign affairs of countries around the globe,” said U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, addressing reporters.
Blinken revealed new information from RT employees, indicating that the network possesses cyber capabilities and has engaged in “covert information influence operations and military procurement.” As a result, the U.S. has designated three entities and two individuals linked to Russia’s destabilizing activities abroad.
International campaign against disinformation
In response to these revelations, Blinken announced that the U.S., U.K., and Canada have launched a joint diplomatic campaign to unite allies and partners worldwide against “Russian disinformation and covert influence.” This coordinated effort is aimed at countering Moscow’s growing cyber influence and propaganda strategies.
Election interference allegations
The sanctions follow recent actions taken by U.S. authorities earlier this month, which included unsealing an indictment against two RT employees and seizing 32 internet domains. These moves were made in connection with allegations of interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
In a statement following the announcement, Blinken outlined three key steps the U.S. would take to combat the influence of Kremlin-backed media outlets, particularly their efforts to disrupt U.S. elections.
Meanwhile, Moscow has categorically denied any attempts to interfere in the U.S. elections, dismissing the charges as baseless.
