The US Supreme Court is close to deciding whether former President Donald Trump holds presidential immunity in the alleged conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election

The U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether former President Donald Trump has presidential immunity against the charge of conspiring to cancel the 2020 election.

The court, where conservatives hold a 6-3 majority, decided Wednesday to hear Trump’s request for immunity from criminal prosecution.

The U.S. Court of Appeals rejected Trump’s claim that he had presidential immunity and ruled he could be tried.

Trump stated in the landmark case that he was acting within the scope of his duties as president and claimed he was immune from criminal prosecution.

In its unanimous decision, the Court of Appeals said, “We cannot accept former President Trump’s claim that he had unlimited authority to commit crimes that would neutralize the most basic check on a president’s executive power – the recognition and implementation of election results.”

Trump’s lawyers took the case to the Supreme Court and asked for the decision to be stopped.
