US-Saudi talks in Riyadh focus on Gaza ceasefire, hostage release

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh on Monday, marking a significant diplomatic engagement as the two nations commemorate 80 years since their historic alliance began.
The high-level meeting, which took place in the Saudi capital, centered on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing regional challenges, particularly the ongoing crisis in Gaza, according to a State Department statement.
During the talks, Rubio highlighted the enduring strength of U.S.-Saudi relations, pointing to the historic 1945 meeting between President Franklin Roosevelt and King Abdulaziz aboard the USS Quincy. That landmark meeting, which took place 80 years ago this month, laid the foundation for decades of strategic partnership between the two nations.
The Secretary and Crown Prince reaffirmed their commitment to securing a ceasefire in Gaza and ensuring the release of all hostages held by Hamas, including U.S. citizens. The discussions also covered maritime security in the Red Sea and freedom of navigation, issues that have gained prominence amid recent regional tensions.
Both parties expressed eagerness to expand economic and defense cooperation, with Rubio conveying his determination to further strengthen the bilateral partnership. The talks also addressed shared interests in Lebanon and broader regional security arrangements.
