US reinstates Houthis as terrorist organization amid Red Sea attacks

The U.S. is preparing to reinstate Yemen’s Houthis on its list of foreign terrorist organizations for its recent attacks in the Red Sea, U.S. official says

The U.S. may reinstate the Iranian-backed Houthis on its list of terrorist organizations after they launched attacks on ships in the Red Sea in response to Israeli attacks in Gaza, a U.S. official told The Associated Press (AP).

According to the U.S. media, the Joe Biden administration is expected to officially announce the decision on the Houthis as soon as possible.

With the U.S. administration’s amendment, the Houthis will once again be considered a “global special terrorist organization” under the Immigration and Nationality Act and Presidential Decree 13224 on Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that they removed the Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, from the list of foreign terrorist organizations, effective Feb. 16, 2021. It was stated that the decision was taken due to the extreme deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Yemen.

The Houthis were previously added to the list of foreign terrorist organizations in the waning days of the Donald Trump administration.
