US President Biden steps down from presidential race
US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not seek reelection in the upcoming presidential race. The announcement came in the form of a letter shared on social media, marking a significant shift in the political landscape as the 2024 election approaches.
In his letter addressed to “My Fellow Americans,” Biden highlighted the achievements of his administration over the past three and a half years. He cited economic strength, investments in healthcare and infrastructure, and progress on issues such as gun safety and climate change.
“Today, America has the strongest economy in the world,” Biden wrote, emphasizing historic investments in rebuilding the nation and expanding affordable health care.
The President also reflected on the challenges faced during his term, including the COVID-19 pandemic and what he described as “the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.”
Despite his intention to run for a second term, Biden stated, “I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
The announcement comes at a crucial time in the election cycle, set to reshape the Democratic primary field. Biden promised to address the nation later to provide more details about his decision.
In his letter, the President expressed gratitude to his supporters and Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he praised as “an extraordinary partner in all this work.”
Biden concluded his message with a call for unity, stating, “We just have to remember we are the United States of America.”
