U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant discuss Israel’s security. Israel opposes possible U.S. sanctions against its military units

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke over the phone with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday to discuss important issues related to Israel’s security and the ongoing negotiations for the release of hostages, an immediate cease-fire and the delivery of vital humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Blinken and Gallant discussed efforts to protect Israel’s security while prioritizing humanitarian concerns in Gaza, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller confirmed. They also emphasized the need to reduce tensions in the region.

Claims of sanctions against Israel

The phone call came amid claims that the U.S. is preparing to sanction Israel’s Netzah Yehuda battalion for human rights violations against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Reacting to the possible sanctions, Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz asked Blinken to reconsider such actions, adding that they could damage Israel’s international legitimacy, especially in times of conflict.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took a firm stance against any sanctions against the country’s military units, reiterating Israel’s determination to vigorously oppose such measures.
