US to sell $138 million worth of equipment to modernize Ukraine’s air defense systems.

On April 11, the United States signed an agreement with the Kiev government for the sale of equipment worth $138 million for the modernization of Ukraine’s air defense systems.

The agreement was announced by U.S. Ambassador to Kiev, Bridget Brink. Brink stated in a post on the social media platform X: “This funding will help maintain Ukraine’s air defenses amidst Russia’s relentless attacks on the energy grid and the Ukrainian populace.”

On April 10, the U.S. State Department approved the sale of $138 million worth of equipment to Ukraine for the repair of Hawk air defense missile systems, which protect critical Ukrainian infrastructure.

Since 2022, the U.S. has begun supplying Ukraine with Hawk defense missiles to replace portable Stinger anti-aircraft missile systems. Since then, Ukraine has acquired many air defense systems, including the American Patriot system.

Between March 22-29, Russia targeted at least seven thermal power plants in areas where air defense is weaker compared to Kiev. Russian missiles also struck two hydroelectric power plants. On the morning of April 11, Russia launched over 40 missiles and approximately 40 unmanned aerial vehicles targeting critical infrastructure in Kharkiv, leaving people in Kiev, Zaporizhia, Odesa, and Lviv oblasts without power, along with disrupting energy infrastructure.
