US imposes sanctions on Iranian, Russian entities over election interference
The U.S. imposed sanctions Tuesday on entities in Iran and Russia, accusing them of attempting to interfere in the 2024 election, according to the Treasury Department.
The sanctions target a subsidiary of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and an organization linked to Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), both of which the U.S. says aimed to “stoke socio-political tensions” and influence voters.
“The governments of Iran and Russia have targeted our election processes and institutions and sought to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns,” Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley T. Smith said in a statement.
“The United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who would undermine our democracy,” Smith added.
