US conducts defensive attack on Houthi targets in Red Sea
The U.S. announces a defensive attack on six targets in the Red Sea, explicitly targeting the Houthi group
The U.S. announced Thursday that it had carried out a “defensive attack” on six targets in the Red Sea against the Houthis.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that they carried out a “defensive attack” on targets determined to be “imminent threats” in the regions controlled by the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen.
CENTCOM made a statement on the social media platform X.
In the statement, CENTCOM said it carried out “defensive attacks” targeting three unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), two anti-ship guided missiles, and one unidirectional unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) between 4:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. on Monday, Sanaa local time.
It was stated in the statement that these targets posed an “imminent threat” to commercial ships and U.S. Navy ships in the region and that the attacks were carried out to “protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for the U.S. Navy and commercial ships.”
Starting on Oct. 31, 2023, Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed by Iran, initiated the seizure of commercial ships off the coast of Yemen. They claimed these vessels were linked to Israeli companies. This action was purportedly in response to Israeli attacks in Gaza. Subsequently, the Houthis commenced attacks on some of these ships using unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles.
