UN humanitarian chief condemns Gaza war as ‘betrayal of humanity,’ stressing its devastating impact on civilians, ongoing humanitarian crisis
Martin Griffiths, the United Nations’ top humanitarian official, has strongly condemned the ongoing war in Gaza, labeling it a “betrayal of humanity.”
Griffiths, who announced he would leave his post in June due to health reasons, made this stark assessment as the conflict nears its six-month anniversary.
“This war claims more civilian victims each day,” Griffiths said, pointing to the devastating impact on non-combatants. His remarks come amid a backdrop of increasing casualties and humanitarian crises resulting from the conflict, which has resulted in at least 33,137 deaths, as reported by the Hamas-run health ministry.
The chief also expressed grave concerns about the potential for further escalation in Gaza.
Griffiths voiced his alarm at “the unconscionable prospect of further escalation in Gaza,” emphasizing the region’s extreme vulnerability. “No one is safe, and there is nowhere safe to go” in the region, he said.
He also pointed out the hindrances to humanitarian work, explaining that “bombardments, insecurity, and denials of access” severely compromise aid efforts.
Finally, Griffiths extended his heartfelt empathy to those affected by the conflict, whether through loss, injury, or the distress of not knowing the fate of loved ones. His words serve as a poignant reminder of the human cost of this ongoing war.
