UN chief calls for immediate Israel cease-fire, citing international consensus
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during his Jordan visit, stresses the urgent need for a cease-fire in Israel, citing consensus among global leaders about the humanitarian crisis
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the urgent need for a cease-fire in Israel during his visit to Jordan on Monday.
Speaking at a news conference, Guterres highlighted the growing agreement among nations regarding the necessity of halting the ongoing conflict to prevent further humanitarian crises.
The secretary-general asserted, “We see a growing consensus emerging in the international community to tell the Israelis that the ceasefire is needed.”
He added that voices from the United States, the European Union, and the Muslim world have joined this consensus, stressing the potential humanitarian disaster that could arise from any ground invasion of Rafah.
“I also see a growing consensus, I heard in the U.S., I heard from the European Union, not to mention, of course, the Muslim world, to tell clearly to Israelis that any ground invasion of Rafah could mean a humanitarian disaster,” Guterres said in the news conference.
The gravity of the situation was underscored by the numbers reported from the conflict. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza cites over 32,000 deaths since the start of the war.
Guterres’ call for a cease-fire signals the international community’s concern about the escalating situation in the region and the unfolding humanitarian crisis.
