Ukrainian high schools will teach students ‘how to shoot’

Ukraine’s schools in the western region of Prykarpattia are integrating rifle and pistol shooting practice using interactive software because of the ongoing conflict

In response to the lasting impact of Russia’s nearly two-year invasion, schools in the western region of Prykarpattia, Ukraine, are implementing rifle and pistol shooting practice using interactive software, according to a statement by Governor Svitlana Onyshchuk Thursday.

The ongoing war has disrupted Ukraine’s education system, compelling the shift to online classes due to the destruction of school facilities from the conflict.

Officials are adapting to the wartime conditions by incorporating new curricula, which include firing drills and drone piloting.

Governor Onyshchuk announced the integration of shooting practice into the curriculum for high school students in the Prykarpattia region.

These sessions will utilize safe interactive systems during “Defence of Ukraine” classes.

The initiative is set to roll out in three dozen schools across the western region, which has experienced relative calm compared to the more conflict-ridden areas in the east.

Describing the interactive systems, Governor Onyshchuk explained: “These systems are mobile and consist ofmultimedia equipment, software and samples of weapons.” She emphasized the introduction of such training is part of a broader effort to enhance skills related to military and patriotic education.

Kyiv authorities report that the conflict with Russian forces has resulted in nearly 3,500 education facilities being damaged, with 365 destroyed.

The move to incorporate interactive shooting practice reflects the challenges faced by educators and officials in adapting to the realities of an environment shaped by ongoing conflict.
