Ukrainian shelling leaves 27 dead and 25 injured in Donetsk, a city in eastern Ukraine under Russian authority

Twenty-seven individuals lost their lives, and 25 were wounded in the shelling of Donetsk, a city in eastern Ukraine under Russian control, according to Denis Pushilin, the appointed leader of the Donetsk region. According to Mayor Alexei Kulemzin, Ukrainian forces targeted a bustling area with shops and a market. Pushilin stated that the city was bombarded by Ukrainian artillery.

Pushilin declared a day of mourning on Monday in the Donetsk People’s Republic, the name given to the part of the region Russia claims to have taken over.

In his nightly video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not mention the attack but stated that Russia had bombarded over 100 cities, towns, and villages in nine regions in Ukraine in a single day, with the attacks in Donetsk region being “particularly severe.”

Ukraine’s forces in the Tavria, or southern zone, stated in a Facebook post that soldiers under its command were not responsible. “Donetsk is Ukraine!” it said. “Russia will have to answer for taking the lives of Ukrainians.”

Pushilin stated that 18 of the injured were hospitalized and seven were being treated as outpatients.

In Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry denounced the attack as “a barbaric act of terrorism” by Ukraine that was carried out “with the use of weapons supplied by the West”.
