U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announces plans to begin sending individuals back to Rwanda in 10 to 12 weeks, citing human rights concerns but expressing readiness to bypass ECHR injunctions for security reasons

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared on Monday that his government is moving forward with plans to send individuals back to Rwanda. The initial flights are foreseen to leave in 10 to 12 weeks.

Citing concerns about human rights implications, Sunak emphasized that while he believes execution can occur within the framework of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), he stated readiness to sidestep ECHR injunctions if necessary, prioritizing security.

Sunak said, “This is one of the most intricate operational undertakings the Home Office has faced. Nevertheless, we are prepared, plans are in motion. No foreign court will hinder us from launching flights to Rwanda.”

Additionally, in January last year, Sunak remarked that tackling small boat crossings by irregular migrants across the English Channel was among five priorities of his government as more than 45,000 migrants arrived in the U.K. that way in 2022.
