Türkiye to back efforts to revive Ukraine-Russia peace talks: Report
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is expected to have a meeting with the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas in Ankara on Jan. 24, Friday.
The meeting is expected to express Ankara’s support for reviving negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, according to sources within the Foreign Ministry speaking to the Russian media outlet, TASS.
Türkiye’s commitment to diplomatic solutions
Minister Fidan reportedly will underline Türkiye’s commitment to advancing diplomatic efforts to achieve a fair and sustainable resolution to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
“The Minister intends to emphasize our support for reinvigorating the negotiation process to end the war between Ukraine and Russia through a just and lasting solution through diplomatic means,” sources speaking to TASS stated.
Fidan and other Turkish authorities have previously highlighted Türkiye’s willingness to mediate in the conflict, drawing on its experience facilitating negotiations in Istanbul in March 2022.
Agreements reached during those talks reportedly ‘collapsed’ due to subsequent developments.
Russia’s conditions for peace
Russian President Vladimir Putin has outlined specific conditions for resolving the conflict, including:
- The withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbass and Novorossiya (New Russia)—large parts of southern and eastern Ukraine, currently under Russian occupation—
- Kyiv renounces NATO membership goals.
- The lifting of all Western sanctions on Moscow.
- The establishment of Ukraine as a neutral and non-nuclear state.
Türkiye’s role as mediator in Russia-Ukraine conflict
Türkiye has consistently supported initiatives aimed at fostering peace and stability in the region. The country has expressed readiness to act as a mediator to bring the parties back to the negotiation table and pursue a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict many times.
