Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp emphasized the importance of Türkiye’s role in European security, stating that the country’s military capabilities and experience make it a valuable partner in shaping the continent’s defense architecture.

“It is important that Türkiye has a seat at the table,” Veldkamp said during his visit to Ankara. “Türkiye has a capable and experienced military force and can contribute in this context.”

Türkiye’s strategic role in European security

Veldkamp’s remarks come as European nations continue discussions on a new security framework. He highlighted that this architecture is being developed through real-time cooperation rather than theoretical designs.

“This is not something we are drawing on a blueprint,” he said. “We are bringing it together in real time, as seen in the recent meeting in London, where [Turkish Foreign Minister] Hakan Fidan also participated alongside European leaders.”

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has also previously pointed to Türkiye’s significance in regional security. Veldkamp echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Türkiye’s role is integral to Europe’s collective defense strategy.

Dutch-Turkish relations and economic ties

The Dutch foreign minister underlined the longstanding economic and social ties between the two nations. “There are half a million people of Turkish descent in the Netherlands, meaning there are nearly half a million bridges between our countries,” he said, noting that Turkish communities are well-integrated and economically stable.

Dutch private companies have also made significant investments in Türkiye, with many businesses recognizing economic opportunities in the country, Veldkamp added.

Middle East stability and Gaza crisis

Turning to the Middle East, Veldkamp reiterated the need for an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza.

“This is crucial for the people of Gaza, for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, and for ensuring humanitarian aid reaches the region,” he stated. “But beyond that, it is essential to work toward a future where Israel exists as a secure state alongside an independent and viable Palestinian state.”

Regarding U.S. policy on Gaza, Veldkamp was direct in his response: “We do not need statements from President Trump. What we need are feasible, livable, fair, and honest plans for the Palestinian people.”

He noted that Egypt, along with other Arab countries, has proposed a roadmap for Gaza’s reconstruction, which the European Union sees as a strong foundation for further negotiations.

Ukraine war and Russia sanctions

On the Ukraine conflict, Veldkamp acknowledged that despite ongoing efforts for a ceasefire, fighting has intensified. “Unfortunately, we often see conflicts escalate just as efforts toward a ceasefire gain momentum,” he said.

The Dutch government remains committed to supporting Ukraine, recently announcing a €3.5 billion ($3.82B) aid package covering military and other forms of assistance. Veldkamp also underscored the importance of maintaining sanctions against Russia.

“The European Union has just approved its 16th sanctions package against Russia, and we are already working on the next one,” he said, emphasizing that continued economic pressure is necessary to push Russia toward serious negotiations.

Türkiye’s diplomatic role in regional conflicts

Veldkamp praised Türkiye’s role in mediating various regional crises, particularly in Ukraine and the Middle East. “Türkiye has played a crucial role in efforts to manage the Russia-Ukraine War, and we hope it continues to do so,” he said.

“Similarly, in the Middle East, Türkiye has influence with certain Palestinian groups, and its efforts to extend the ceasefire in Gaza are valuable,” he added.

The Dutch minister reiterated his country’s commitment to maintaining an open dialogue with Türkiye, highlighting the importance of cooperation between the two NATO allies in addressing global security challenges.
