Türkiye opens honorary consulate in Guayaquil, Ecuador
Türkiye has inaugurated a honorary consulate in Guayaquil, Ecuador, marking a significant step in fostering diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.
Ceremony celebrates new diplomatic chapter
A reception in Hilton Colon Hotel commemorated the opening of Türkiye’s honorary consulate in Guayaquil, often referred to as “Ecuador’s Istanbul.” Attendees included Türkiye’s Ambassador to Quito Basak Yalcin, Ecuadorian Honorary Consul Alvaro Dassum Alcivar and prominent business leaders.
Members of the Ecuadorian press also covered the event extensively. Honorary Consul Dassum expressed pride in his appointment, emphasizing his commitment to advancing the friendly ties between Ecuador and Türkiye.
Expanding economic cooperation between Türkiye, Ecuador
Turkish Ambassador Yalcin highlighted the growing bilateral relationship, underpinned by trade agreements such as the Trade Cooperation Agreement (2023) and the Administrative Cooperation Agreement in Customs (2024). “These agreements will play a crucial role in enhancing trade between our countries,” said Yalcin.
She also noted that the upcoming launch of DEIK‘s Ecuador Business Council in 2024 will further bolster economic activities.
Yalcin praised Turkish companies operating in Ecuador, including Yilport and Karpowership, as examples of successful collaboration. She identified renewable energy, construction, infrastructure, and defense as sectors with untapped potential for future partnerships.
Diplomatic milestone approaching
With 2025 marking 75 years of Türkiye-Ecuador diplomatic relations, Yalcin affirmed that the Guayaquil honorary consulate will contribute to strengthening ties in trade, cultural exchange and beyond.
