Turkish mission plays key role in Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts

Türkiye’s military training mission in Somalia, known as TURKSOM, has emerged as a crucial element in the country’s counterterrorism operations, providing extensive military training and logistical support to Somali security forces in their fight against terrorist groups such as al-Shabab and Daesh.

TURKSOM’s role in strengthening Somalia’s security
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktas, emphasized the significance of TURKSOM in shaping Somalia’s military capabilities.
“Somalia is battling terrorist organizations with global ties, such as al-Shabab and Daesh, while also countering maritime piracy targeting international trade routes. TURKSOM’s support to the Somali Armed Forces serves as a critical security assurance for the region,” Aktas said.
Since its establishment in 2017, TURKSOM Military Training Base has been instrumental in restructuring and professionalizing Somalia’s armed forces by enhancing military education, infrastructure, and logistical systems.

Gorgor battalions: Frontline force against terrorism
Ambassador Aktas highlighted the Gorgor Battalions, an elite unit of the Somali National Army trained and equipped by Türkiye, as a key force in counterterrorism operations.
“The Gorgor Battalions, primarily supplied with equipment by Türkiye, are deployed on the frontlines in the fight against al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabab. Their operations have been highly successful, significantly contributing to Somalia’s national security,” he noted.
According to official reports, TURKSOM has trained 10 Gorgor Battalions, 457 officers, and 422 non-commissioned officers. An additional 10 battalions, 284 officers, and 60 non-commissioned officers are currently undergoing training.

Comprehensive training at TURKSOM’s military academy
The TURKSOM Military Academy plays a pivotal role in training Somalia’s future military leaders. Officers undergo a three-year training program, while non-commissioned officers complete two years of training.
Since 2024, the academy has been recognized as a university-level institution, granting degrees in defense studies, further increasing its appeal among Somali cadets.
Graduates have the opportunity to pursue advanced military training in Türkiye, reinforcing Somalia’s military leadership pipeline across land, air and naval forces.

Regional stability and Türkiye’s diplomatic engagement
Aktas stressed the broader geopolitical importance of Somalia’s stability, noting that the country’s strategic location makes its security a global concern. “Somalia’s security is vital not only for the region but for global maritime trade and counterterrorism efforts,” he said.
Türkiye has significantly strengthened its bilateral relations with Somalia since President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit in 2011. The cooperation extends beyond military training to economic, humanitarian, and development initiatives.

Future prospects: Enhancing bilateral cooperation
The ambassador reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, emphasizing ongoing projects in economic development and hydrocarbon exploration.
“Türkiye’s involvement in Somalia includes over $1 billion in humanitarian and development aid, facilitated through organizations such as TIKA, the Turkish Red Crescent, and the Diyanet Foundation. Our economic ties continue to expand, with Turkish companies investing in Somalia’s future,” Aktas added.
The hydrocarbon exploration efforts led by the Oruc Reis seismic research vessel are expected to unlock new opportunities for Somalia’s economic development and enhance energy cooperation between the two nations.
