Turkish cooperation agency launches agricultural project in Niger’s Agadez region
The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has initiated an agricultural production project in Niger’s Agadez region, which is facing severe impacts from global warming and drought.
Why it matters?
This project is crucial in combating the effects of climate change, providing year-round agricultural production, and addressing water access issues in one of the most vulnerable regions in Niger.
Details
- TIKA established a 2-hectare agricultural and trial center in Eladep village, where farmers will now be able to produce continuously, thanks to new infrastructure, including a garden, solar energy systems, irrigation systems and various agricultural tools.
- The project was developed with the support of the Agadez Municipality and the Agadez Sultanate and the opening ceremony was attended by key local figures, including Agadez Sultanate representatives, youth council leaders, and TIKA officials.
The center is designed to provide local farmers with the resources they need to overcome seasonal challenges and improve agricultural output.
Key infrastructure like water wells and storage facilities has been incorporated to help mitigate the region’s water scarcity issues.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to diversify agriculture and livestock in the region, empower youth, and address systemic challenges created by climate change and irregular migration movements.
