Turkish anti-disinformation center counters Greek claims on Imia tensions
Turkiye’s Center for Combating Disinformation intervenes to rectify claims of Greece’s ANT1 about Turkish coast guard threatening Greek fishermen in Imia
Greece’s leading broadcaster ANT1 television channel, following intervention by the Turkish Center for Combating Disinformation, corrected its news about alleged threats by the Turkish coast guard to Greek fishermen in Imia (Kardak) on Thursday.
After consultation with the relevant units, the center determined that the images of the tension between the Turkish coast guard and Greek fishermen being shared were outdated and circulated in digital media in 2020.
ANT1 corrected its news upon the reaction and in Thursday’s news bulletin, the channel drew attention to the fact that the claim did not reflect the truth. It emphasized that the video in the news was from three years ago and stated that peace prevailed in the region, contrary to the allegations in question.
Greek government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, responding to a question from journalists today, emphasized that the video was from three years ago.
It had stated in three languages, Turkish, English, and Greek, that the allegations in the news in question did not reflect the truth.
“The news titled ‘Turkish Coast Guard threatened Greek fishermen in Imia’ in some media outlets contains disinformation. It has been determined that the images of the tension between the Turkish coast guard and Greek fishermen near Imia, which are the subject of the mentioned news, are not up-to-date and were circulated in digital media in 2020,” it said.
