Trump wins Michigan as Muslim voters fuel Harris’ loss in critical swing state
Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, lost the critical swing state of Michigan in Tuesday’s election, a state where the votes of Arab and Muslim communities proved decisive.
Anger over uwavering Israel support
Republican candidate Donald Trump won Michigan’s 15 electoral votes, with many American Muslims expressing anger over the Biden-Harris administration’s unwavering support for Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. Since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, more than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza.
Trump secured 292 Electoral College votes, surpassing the 270 needed to win the presidency. Harris, who earned 224 votes, also trailed Trump by approximately 5 million votes in the popular count, with Trump receiving around 71 million total votes.
In addition to Michigan, Trump won key swing states, including North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Florida, and also triumphed in numerous other states across the nation.
Trump expressed his gratitude to Americans, calling the victory “a magnificent victory for the American people that will allow us to make America great again.”
This victory marks Trump’s return to the White House, making him only the second U.S. president to serve non-consecutive terms, joining Grover Cleveland, who served in the late 1800s.
In the broader political landscape, the Republican Party gained significant ground. With the election results, Republicans took control of the U.S. Senate, with 52 seats to 42, and several races still pending. Control of the House of Representatives is still undecided, but Republicans currently lead 210 to 181, with 218 votes needed for a majority.
At the state level, Republicans also made gains, now holding 27 governorships compared to the Democrats’ 23.
