Trump warns Putin over Ukraine, threatens 50% tariffs on Russian oil

US President Donald Trump said he was ‘very angry’ and pissed off’ at Russian President Vladimir Putin for questioning the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy, calling the remarks “not going in the right location.”
Speaking in a phone interview with NBC News, Trump confirmed he plans to speak with Putin this week.
The comments came after Putin suggested Ukraine could be placed under a temporary administration, potentially sidelining Zelenskyy and paving the way for new elections.
Trump threatens secondary tariffs on Russian oil
Donald Trump said if he cannot reach a deal with Moscow to end the war in Ukraine, he will impose secondary tariffs on all Russian oil exports.
The proposed tarrifs range between 25% and %50 and could take effect within a month without a ceasefire.
“If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault — which it might not be — then I will put secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia,” Trump said.
He added, “That would mean if you buy oil from Russia, you can’t do business in the United States.”

Focus on ending war in Ukraine
Since taking the office on January 20, US President Trump has made ending what he calls a ‘ridiculous’ war in Ukraine a central foreign policy goal.
He has frequently criticized Ukraine’s Zelenskyy, at times calling him a dictator — a claim that has been widely discredited.
Despite his criticism of both leaders, Trump has maintained that he has “a very good relationship” with Putin. He said his anger “dissipates quickly if he does the right thing.”

Limited ceasefire and ongoing talks
Last week, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a partial ceasefire allowing safe navigation in the Black Sea and suspending strikes on energy infrastructure. Despite initial and ‘superficial’ agreements on a ceasefire, both sides continue to attack each other.
The move came after initial negotiations between U.S., Ukrainian, and Russian officials.
Trump reiterated that without further progress, secondary tariffs would go into effect, targeting Russian oil and other products sold in the U.S. market.

Trump to speak with Putin this week
Trump confirmed to NBC News that he plans to speak with Putin again in the coming days.
His administration continues to push for broader ceasefire terms and political restructuring in Ukraine, though the prospect of new elections remains contentious.
