President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is preparing several key executive actions, including steps to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement and shrink the size of national monuments, according to a report by The New York Times.

These moves align with Trump’s campaign promises to prioritize energy development and reduce federal environmental regulations.

Key details

  • Paris Agreement: Trump is expected to take immediate action to begin the process of withdrawing the U.S. from the 2015 Paris climate accord, a major priority during his campaign.
  • National monuments: Plans are in the works to reduce the size of certain national monuments, which would open up more land for drilling and mining.
  • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Trump is likely to reverse the Biden administration’s pause on new LNG export permits, particularly to key markets in Asia and Europe.
  • California waiver: The new administration is also set to revoke a waiver, allowing California and other states to implement stricter pollution standards than the federal government.

Trump’s transition spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, emphasized that the election results give him a mandate to implement the policies he campaigned on. Meanwhile, the Biden administration had paused LNG export approvals earlier this year, pending an environmental and economic impact study, which is expected to be released for public comment by the end of 2024.

Other potential changes

Some members of the transition team are also reportedly considering relocating the Environmental Protection Agency’s headquarters out of Washington, D.C., as part of broader plans to reshape the agency’s role and operations.
