Thousands march across Lisbon in anti-Islam far right group ‘1143‘ rallies
Amid growing tensions over the influx of migrants to Europe, the anti-Islam ‘1143’ far-right group staged rallies across Portugal’s Lisbon against Islam
In a display of tension and contrasting ideologies, Lisbon’s central squares became the stage for polarized events Saturday.
The far-right group “1143” held an Islamophobic and racist demonstration titled “Against the Islamization of Europe”.
The event, led by neo-Nazi activist Mario Machado, moved from Largo Luis de Camoes to Praca do Municipio. Authorities had previously denied the group’s request to demonstrate in the Mouraria area, known for its diverse community.
Earlier in the day a group of immigrant associations and anti-racist movements held a popular festival in Largo do Intendente, near Mouraria neighborhood, opposing the “1143” group demonstration and promoting Portugal’s multiculturalism and diversity.
