Syrian civilian areas hit in latest Israeli airstrike wave

Syrian state media report Israeli-led airstrikes in Homs, causing civilian harm and escalating military tensions in the area

Israel has now been accused of conducting airstrikes in Syria’s Homs province.

Syrian state media reported the attacks late Tuesday, which have resulted in civilian casualties and property damage.

Syria’s state-run SANA news agency cited a military source, confirming the death and injury of several civilians because of the alleged Israeli strikes in the Homs area. The agency reported that Israeli warplanes, launching missiles from north of Lebanon’s Tripoli, targeted various sites in Homs and its vicinity.

The strikes, according to local sources speaking to Reuters, hit several Syrian army outposts and the Shayrat airbase. Syrian air defenses reportedly intercepted some of the Israeli missiles. The pro-government Sham FM radio station added that affluent areas in Homs and the farmlands in al-Waer were affected.

Syrian state television displayed scenes of ambulances rushing to one of the strike sites, where a building was significantly damaged.

The Israel Defense Forces have not issued any comments regarding these reports.

This attack comes in the context of heightened tensions in the region, particularly since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October. Israel has intensified its campaign of airstrikes in Syria, aiming to counter Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah’s presence, amidst ongoing exchanges of fire across the Lebanese-Israeli border.

These developments occur amid a broader geopolitical struggle in the region, with Iran’s involvement in Syria since the early stages of the Syrian civil war, where they supported President Bashar al-Assad’s government against a widespread rebellion.

The U.S. also recently conducted airstrikes in Syria and Iraq, targeting Iran-linked groups, in response to the killing of three U.S. service personnel in Jordan on Jan. 28.
