Sudan’s al-Burhan welcomes Türkiye’s offer to mediate in ongoing conflict
Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has welcomed Türkiye’s offer to mediate in the country’s prolonged conflict, according to Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef.
The statement followed a meeting on Saturday in Port Sudan between Burhan and Türkiye’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Burhanettin Duran.
Türkiye’s peace initiative gains support in Sudan
During the meeting, Burhan conveyed his appreciation for Türkiye’s willingness to mediate and called on Duran to relay the Sudanese leadership’s support for the initiative to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“Sudan needs brothers and friends like Türkiye,” Youssef said, emphasizing that the initiative holds potential for achieving lasting peace in Sudan.
In December, Erdogan expressed Türkiye’s readiness to help resolve Sudan‘s conflict, prevent external interference and stabilize the region during a phone call with Burhan.
UAE’s role in Sudan’s conflict
The Sudanese government has accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—claims denied by the UAE.
External analysts have echoed these accusations, further complicating the conflict.
Last month, Sudan alleged that RSF forces were operating UAE-assembled drones from neighboring Chad. Meanwhile, the UAE has maintained that it does not provide military support to paramilitaries in Sudan.
Türkiye calls for regional cooperation
Following his meeting with Burhan, Türkiye’s Deputy Foreign Minister Duran stressed the importance of collaborative efforts for peace.
He noted Türkiye is prepared to engage with other regional actors to overcome obstacles to a resolution.
I am received by Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Al Sharif, Minister of Finance and Economic Development Ibrahim and President of the Sovereignty Council Burhan. I conveyed the messages of our President Erdoğan and Minister Fidan.
During the meetings, I underscored Türkiye’s readiness and determination to end the sufferings of brotherly Sudanese people.
Türkiye’s Deputy Foreign Minister Burhanettin Duran
The UAE has since expressed support for Türkiye’s diplomatic efforts, with its foreign ministry stating a readiness to cooperate on initiatives aimed at ending Sudan’s crisis and achieving a comprehensive solution.
