Serbian president warns of unpredictable scenarios in Kosovo
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic expresses concern about the possible consequences for relations between Serbia and Kosovo, emphasizing the need for credible mediation and international support
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic warned Monday of “unpredictable scenarios with major consequences” in the relations between Serbia and Kosovo.
Expressing his concerns on social media, Vucic emphasized the need for credible mediation and international support, particularly from the United Nations (UN), to prevent what he called “ethnic engineering” by Kosovo.
Vucic’s remarks came after a session of the United Nations Security Council in New York, where the regular six-month report on the UN Mission in Kosovo was presented to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
“It is high time to realize that the people of Kosovo and Metohija cannot rely on the UN either as an impartial referee or as a preventive measure against Pristina’s cunning ethnic engineering, which I fear will lead us to unpredictable scenarios with major consequences” Vucic said on social media following the session.
Vucic underlined the need for a strong UN presence and principled interventions in Kosovo in order to strengthen the organization’s global standing.
Secretary-General Guterres noted the escalating tensions and fragile security situation, particularly in northern Kosovo, while acknowledging some progress in the EU-brokered agreements between Belgrade and Pristina.
Guterres expressed concern about the stalling in the formation of the Union of Serbian Municipalities and expressed concern about new regulations affecting the economic and social rights of Serbs and other minority communities.
Guterres called for urgent talks in the context of the EU-brokered dialogue to protect the rights of all affected communities and vulnerable groups.
Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 and was recognized by a number of countries, including Türkiye. However, Serbia has consistently denied Kosovo’s independence and maintained its claim to the territory.
