Kosovo’s Prime Minister Kurti expresses heightened concerns as Serbian army movements near the border prompt fears of potential invasion, highlighting the ongoing tensions in the region

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti raised concerns late Thursday, stating that the Serbian army is ”waiting for the best possible opportunity to invade Kosovo.” Kurti shared footage on social media platform X, highlighting Serbian army movements near the border with Kosovo.

“Days ago, Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic issued an open threat: They are waiting for the best possible opportunity to invade Kosovo. Today, Serbian Army units have been detected just meters away from our border. We are closely monitoring the situation for any attempt to cross into Kosovo territory,” said Kurti.

Earlier this week, Kurti urged the U.K. to send more troops to Kosovo to safeguard against a potential invasion by Serbia. The security of Kosovo is currently under the responsibility of NATO’s peacekeeping mission (KFOR).

Turkish troops, serving as part of the KFOR mission, continue to patrol the border region between Kosovo and Serbia to ensure security. Photos of their patrol activities are frequently shared on KFOR’s social media platforms.

KFOR, deployed in Kosovo on June 12, 1999, was established following a U.N. Security Council decision to maintain security and stability in the region. The mission consists of over 4,500 military personnel from 27 countries, including 21 NATO members and six non-NATO partner countries.

Türkiye maintains the second-largest contingent within KFOR, contributing a minimum of 780 soldiers.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and has been recognized by numerous countries, including Türkiye. However, Belgrade does not recognize Kosovo’s independence and considers it as part of neighboring Serbia.
