Senegalese citizens use a symbolic vote to express their objection to the postponement of the presidential election

Opposition supporters in Senegal participated in a symbolic vote Sunday to show their objection to postponing a presidential election originally scheduled for Feb. 25.

The symbolic vote in the capital Dakar was organized by a loose group of 16 presidential candidates calling themselves FC25, ostensibly to show their opposition to postponing the presidential election and to demand a new election date without delay.

Declaring Feb. 25 as “a day of mourning for Senegalese democracy,” the candidates called on voters via social media to “show President Macky Sall that Feb. 25 is the day designated for the presidential election,” with red and black cards.

Images on social media show dozens of people lining up with their national IDs in front of “ballot box officials” to vote in symbolic ballot boxes using a fake application.

Thousands of social media users joined the protest online, changing their profile pictures to a black image that read “RIP February 25th.”
