Russian FM Lavrov’s visit to Beijing bolsters strong diplomatic bonds
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reinforces ties with China, seeking diplomatic support amid Western pressures on Ukraine war
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov landed in Beijing Monday, underlining the robust relationship between Russia and its close diplomatic ally, China.
The visit comes against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine and concerted efforts by both nations to counter the influence of the United States and its allies.
During his two-day stay, Lavrov is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, to discuss a series of “hot topics” that will also include joint cooperation in international organizations, such as the United Nations and the G20, Moscow had said earlier.
The talks aim to deepen bilateral cooperation and align their stances on the international stage.
Both Russia and China have increasingly clashed with democratic nations and NATO, striving to expand their influence in regions like Africa, the Middle East, and South America.
Moscow and Beijing declared a “no limits” partnership in February 2022 when Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing just days before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. China has thrown its support behind Russia’s assertion that Western provocations triggered Putin’s military action in Ukraine in 2022.
Despite Western pressure on China to use its influence to broker peace in Ukraine, Beijing maintains a neutral stance, emphasizing its commitment to promoting peace talks through its own channels. Chinese officials refute claims of aiding Russia militarily, stressing that they have controlled exports of dual-use items with potential military applications.
The visit underscores the deepening diplomatic ties between Moscow and Beijing, with both nations leveraging their partnership as a counterbalance to Western dominance. As Lavrov strengthens alliances in Beijing, the world watches closely to see how this strategic collaboration will shape the ongoing geopolitical landscape.
