Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law the ratification of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Russia and North Korea, Russia’s state news agency TASS reported on Saturday.

The treaty, originally signed in Pyongyang on June 19, was submitted by Putin to the State Duma for ratification on Oct. 15.

It outlines provisions for immediate military and other forms of assistance under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter, which permits individual and collective self-defense.

According to the treaty’s preamble, the agreement supports the core interests of both nations, aiming to bolster peace, regional and global security, and stability. It also emphasizes a partnership based on mutual respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, equality, and non-interference in domestic affairs.

This agreement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
