Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke by phone on Monday to discuss the ongoing situation in Syria, the Kremlin said.

The Kremlin added that the talks, initiated by Tehran, expressed “unconditional support” for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in its efforts to restore constitutional order.

Coordinating with Türkiye is vital

Meanwhile, both leaders emphasized the importance of coordinating efforts within the Astana framework, which includes Türkiye, to address the conflict.

The conversation also touched on the development of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iran, building on agreements made during Putin and Pezeshkian’s October meeting at the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.

The Kremlin said further contacts between the two leaders at different levels are planned.

The call came as clashes broke out last week in rural areas of Aleppo, Syria, marking a re-escalation of the fighting after a period of relative calm in the country’s civil war.
