Russia foils Ukraine’s drone attack attempt in Black Sea
Russia claims to have thwarted an attack by a Ukrainian drone on a ship in the Black Sea
The Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation announced via the Telegram messaging application on Saturday that it successfully thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack targeting Russian “civilian transport ships” in the southwestern Black Sea.
Russian patrol boats and fighter jets intercepted the attack, destroyed one Ukrainian naval drone with artillery fire, and neutralized the others through electronic warfare, the ministry said.
Moscow said that civilian ships in the Black Sea have rarely been targeted since it sent troops to Ukraine in February 2022. Still, since last July both sides have viewed ships sailing to each other’s ports as potential carriers of military cargo.
It is unclear exactly where the attack occurred, but the southwestern part of the Black Sea is very close to the Bosporus, through which Türkiye’s sea-going cargoes pass.
