Astana Format’s role in Syrian conflict

The Astana format, which involves Russia, Türkiye and Iran, has been instrumental in efforts to mediate peace and reduce tensions in Syria.

The three nations have held multiple rounds of discussions to address various aspects of the Syrian crisis, including ceasefire agreements and the stabilization of regions affected by conflict.

Russia, Türkiye, and Iran’s roles in the Syrian conflict

Russia has been a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime throughout the Syrian Civil War, providing military and diplomatic support. Meanwhile, Türkiye and Iran have also played significant roles, albeit with differing interests.

Türkiye, opposed to Assad‘s rule, has supported opposition groups, while Iran has provided crucial backing to Assad’s government, deploying Iran-backed proxy groups in the region and creating a safe line for Hezbollah and other regional groups Tehran supports.

Türkiye recently made multiple calls to Syria’s overthrown leader Bashar al-Assad to normalize relations with Türkiye to stabilize the Middle East.
