Russia condemns US missile defense base in Poland, warns of escalating nuclear threat
Russia has warned that the newly established U.S. ballistic missile defense base in northern Poland will escalate the overall nuclear threat, while Poland argues that such “threats” from Moscow only strengthen the case for NATO defense systems.
The air defense base, located in Redzikowo near the Baltic coast, was opened on Nov. 13 as part of NATO’s broader missile defense system.
Why it matters?
The Russian government has condemned the base, calling it a provocative action that destabilizes global security. Moscow claims that the establishment of the base undermines strategic stability and raises nuclear risks. In contrast, Poland’s foreign ministry defended the base, clarifying that it is strictly for defensive purposes and will enhance NATO’s air defense capabilities.
Key responses
Maria Zakharova, Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, described the missile defense base as a threat to global strategic stability.
- Pawel Wronski, Poland’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, emphasized that there are no nuclear missiles at the base, and it serves solely for defense.
- The U.S. base at Redzikowo is part of NATO’s “Aegis Ashore” missile defense initiative, designed to intercept short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
What’s next?
Zakharova warned that such Western military facilities could become primary targets for potential destruction, with advanced weapons used to target them if necessary.
The NATO missile defense system, which includes bases in Poland, Romania, and Türkiye, along with U.S. Navy destroyers in Spain, continues to expand.
