Both countries accuse Washington of heightening the risk of regional escalation through military actions

Russia and China condemned the recent air strikes carried out by the United States on targets in Iraq and Syria in a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting Monday.

Both countries accused Washington of heightening the risk of regional escalation through its military actions.

Russia claimed that the U.S. decision to launch the strikes was politically motivated, suggesting a connection to the upcoming presidential election in November.

Moscow, embroiled in debates at the UNSC over its invasion of Ukraine in the past two years, requested the council meeting following the U.S.’s series of strikes against Iran-aligned targets in Iraq and Syria.

The strikes were a response to a drone attack on a U.S. base in Jordan, which resulted in the death of three soldiers.

The criticism from Russia, China and Syria highlighted the international community’s divided stance on the U.S.’s military interventions in the Middle East.
