Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in the capital city of Tashkent as part of an official visit on Monday.
During the open portion of the meeting, Putin described Uzbekistan as a “strategic partner and ally,” highlighting the impressive growth in economic ties between the two countries. Putin noted that trade volume increased by approximately 30% last year.
Putin also mentioned that Russian direct investments in Uzbekistan have reached $10 billion, with 3,000 Russian-owned companies operating in Uzbekistan.
Mirziyoyev, in turn, referred to Putin’s visit as “historic,” signaling the beginning of a new era in the comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance between the two nations.
According to a statement from the Kremlin regarding the visit, various agreements worth nearly $20 billion were signed following the discussions between the two parties.
Among the signed agreements is one concerning the construction of a low-capacity nuclear power plant by Russia in Uzbekistan. No further details were provided about the project, but if realized, it would be Central Asia’s first nuclear power plant.
The two countries also signed agreements on defense, counter-terrorism, and technology sharing.
