Brazil declares state of emergency in response to severe epidemic of dengue fever

On Monday, Rio de Janeiro declared a public health emergency just days before Carnival celebrations due to the outbreak of dengue fever.

The move aims to control the spread of the mosquito-borne disease, which has witnessed a significant surge in cases, leading to growing concerns among health officials.

According to the city council’s epidemiological observatory panel, Rio has already reported more than 11,200 cases of dengue in the early weeks of 2024, a stark contrast to the nearly 23,000 cases recorded throughout the entire year of 2023. 

The situation has prompted authorities to take urgent measures to curb the further spread of the disease. The city announced plans to open 10 care centers across Rio, while the Health Ministry established an emergency center to coordinate operations. 

Rio is not the only region facing such a crisis, as two other states – Minas Gerais, the second most populous state, and the Federal District, where Brasilia is located – have also declared public health emergencies due to the rising number of dengue infections.
