Extremist rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo kill at least two dozen civilians in separate attacks this week, raising concerns about escalating violence in the region

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, with ties to Daesh, have reportedly killed around two dozen civilians in separate attacks this week in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

On Tuesday, they carried out an assault in Mambasa territory, Ituri province, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals. The victims were mostly attacked in their own homes.

In a separate incident on Monday in Beni territory, North Kivu province, ADF killed at least 11 people using machetes and firearms, according to Col. Charles Ehuta Omeonga, a local administrator.

The violence underscores the ongoing challenges in the region, where numerous armed groups vie for control, resources and security.

Recent years have seen an escalation in ADF attacks, reaching even the city of Goma and Ituri province. The United Nations has raised alarms about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in eastern DRC, including instances of gender-based violence.
