Pro-Palestinian protesters march during Democratic convention
Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in Chicago, the host city for the Democratic National Convention, to march and demand an end to what they call “genocide in Gaza” and to urge the U.S. to cut aid to Israel.
As the countdown continues for the U.S. presidential election on November 5, the four-day Democratic National Convention kicked off in Chicago yesterday.
The first day of the convention, which features speeches from many prominent Democratic politicians, including President Joe Biden, was marked by a large protest on the streets of Chicago by thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
The “March on the DNC” coalition, comprising over 270 pro-Palestinian and other civil society organizations advocating various social causes, began their protest yesterday and continued today near the United Center, where the convention is being held.
The massive crowd marched for nearly two hours, ensuring that their messages regarding Gaza was heard by both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
The march, which also gained significant coverage in American media, saw participants chanting slogans like “Stop the genocide in Gaza,” “Genocidal Joe,” and “Free Palestine.”
Protesters carried banners with similar messages, with many focusing on the theme of “No U.S. aid to Israel.”
The demonstrators are expected to remain on the ground until President Joe Biden’s speech this evening.
The “March on the DNC” coalition also announced plans for another major protest on Thursday, when Kamala Harris is scheduled to deliver her official acceptance speech as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.
