U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced the nomination of Florida Representative Matt Gaetz to head the Justice Department, as stated in an official post on Trump’s Truth Social account. If confirmed by the Senate, Gaetz, a Republican member of the House, will take the role of Attorney General in the upcoming administration.

Trump expressed his excitement about the nomination, saying, “I am deeply honored to announce that Congressman Matt Gaetz from Florida has been nominated as the U.S. Attorney General.”

The 42-year-old Gaetz, praised by Trump in the announcement, holds a law degree from the College of William & Mary. Trump described him as “an exceptionally skilled and determined attorney who has proven his commitment to urgently needed reforms at the Justice Department.” Trump emphasized that Gaetz’s primary objectives would include strengthening the U.S. borders, dismantling criminal organizations, and restoring public trust in the Justice Department.

In the statement, Trump also acknowledged Gaetz’s efforts on the House Judiciary Committee, where he has scrutinized Justice Department actions under the Democratic administration.

If confirmed, Gaetz would replace Merrick Garland, the current Attorney General appointed by Democrats. However, Gaetz’s nomination may face scrutiny due to an earlier House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations concerning potential misconduct involving drug use and inappropriate behavior.

The Senate confirmation process for Gaetz’s nomination will be closely watched, with both his supporters and critics weighing in on the potential direction of the Justice Department under his leadership.
