Poland hopes for Türkiye’s EU membership as ‘realistic and tangible process’

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his hope on Wednesday that Türkiye’s entry into the European Union is now a “realistic and tangible process.”
At a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Tusk reaffirmed Poland’s continued support for Türkiye’s EU membership aspirations. “We have always supported Türkiye in this regard and we will continue to do so,” Tusk said.
Tusk also outlined the goal of boosting trade between the two countries, aiming for a volume of $15 billion. He noted that the trade volume has already surpassed $12 billion, expressing confidence that the target would be reached.

Poland proposes Türkiye take active role in Ukraine peace talks
On regional stability, Tusk emphasized Poland’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction and noted that both Polish and Turkish companies would play a role in this effort.
He further proposed that Türkiye take a leading role in facilitating Russia-Ukraine peace talks, underlining that both Türkiye and Poland have advocated for peace since the start of the conflict. Tusk also welcomed the recent peace talks held in Saudi Arabia.
Tusk reiterated Poland’s confidence in collaboration with Türkiye on the reconstruction and stabilization of Syria. “Türkiye’s role in the reconstruction and stabilization of Syria cannot be denied,” he said.
Tusk also spoke of Poland’s strong relations with the United States, expressing hope that joint initiatives with Türkiye would be supported by partner countries. He highlighted planned projects, including the construction of a high-speed rail system, where Türkiye’s experience would be invaluable.
“Today is a very valuable day in terms of cooperation and relations,” Tusk added.
In a symbolic gesture, President Erdogan presented Tusk with a letter dated 1745, originally sent from Poland to the Ottoman grand vizier. Tusk expressed gratitude for the gift, calling it “precious” and emphasizing the historical significance.
“This is really precious for me. I believe the meeting was very productive. I am very positive looking forward. Yes, it is time to roll up our sleeves. Thank you,” Tusk said.
Tusk also shared the symbolic gift on his social media platform X, highlighting that it is a “symbol of peace and friendship between our nations.”
